St Kiernans march on in U18s Herts Cup

(St Dympnas 2-07 St Kiernans 2-17)

A powerful second-half performance by favourites, St Kiernans of London, proved too much for a gallant St Dympnas Luton side at Sundon Park, Luton on Saturday afternoon in a very entertaining match in the U18s Herts Cup 2013.

St Dympnas played with the breeze in the first half but it was Kiernans that were first off the mark with a point set up by a surging run from their midfield. Dympnas were beginning to hit their full forward with long balls and one of these by captain Sean McMonagle went in under the crossbar for a goal for Dympnas after 7 minutes. Kiernans immediately responded with two points from their impressive centre half back and midfielder. Further points were traded on both sides before a great move from St Dympnas that started from their half-back line ended up with a well-taken goal from their full forward Keenan Berry. The last 10 minutes of the first half proved to be Dympnas best spell of the match with some excellent football and points scored. Kiernans response was always swift though and at half-time, the score was 1-6 to 0-6 in favour of St Dympnas.

Kiernans moved up a gear in the second half and with the strong breeze, were totally dominant for the majority of the half. They proved too strong for Dympnas in the key areas. They had very impressive displays at centre-half back and midfield as well as in the forward line. They strung together some excellent moves resulting in really well-taken scores including a couple of good goals in this period. This young St Dympnas side tried their level best but tired as the half progressed. Dympnas pointed a free late on in the half but Kiernans, deserved winners ran out victors by 10 points. It was a very entertaining match and thanks to James McKenzie for referring the game.
