Dulwich Harps Club Notes 31st of July

Our senior men’s team travelled to Ruislip for the first time in over two years as they took on Thomas McCurtains in the AIB Division three league final.

The Harps started the game strongly and scored early points from Ciaran Stone, Enda Tuohy and Tim Russell. However this early lead was quickly pegged back by McCurtains through a number of frees. Playing against a stiff breeze, the Harps were forced to carry the ball out of the defence and this was proving difficult at times.  Nevertheless they plodded on to half time and further points from Gerry McNamee and Ciaran Stone left them heading into the break trailing by two on a score line of 0.7 to 05.

Buoyed on by the wind in the second half, the Harps started brightly and an early goal from Ryan McAnearney looked to give the Harps the impetus to kick on. But McCurtains running game was proving difficult to contain and inconsistent tackling and fouling resulted in a number of scoreable frees being given away for which the Harps were punished.

Niall Russell slotted over a long distance free to keep the Harps within touching distance and Darren White who was proving to a be a real handful inside, kicked two lovely points in quick session to give the Harps a slender one point lead going into the final minutes of the game.

But once again, the lack of discipline in the tackle proved to be downfall of the Harps and a number of late frees and two points from play meant that McCurtains ran out eventual winners on the scoreline of 0.15 to 1.09.

This was a bitter pill to swallow for the Harps as they had gone throughout the league campaign unbeaten.  However despite the loss, there were a number of positives to take from the performance and the players and management will be keen to rectify this defeat in the upcoming championship campaign.

The next game for the men is against the Irish Guards on Thursday evening at 7:00 on the Rye.

Training continues for the men’s team on Tuesday and Thursday evenings @ 7:15pm on Peckham Rye Common. For more information contact Alan (07472 211445) or Enda (07522 723765).

Unfortunately our ladies have no competitive game for a number of weeks although a number of friendlies have been lined up.  The girls continue to train on a Monday evening on Peckham Rye Common with a start time of 7:00pm.
