Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes.

Last weekend our footballers and hurlers recorded good wins at Goodmayes in windy conditions on Sunday. While our Ladies and U-16's both suffered defeats in their first games.

This weekend the Hurlers will play the second round of the Ronan Cup at Goodmayes on Saturday at 4.00pm while our Minor footballers travel to play St Kiernans in the league. Our Camogs will also take the field for their first taste of league action as they travel to Pairc na hÉireann in Birmingham.

On Sunday our footballers will take on Tir Chonnail Gaels in the Semi Finals of the McArdle Cup in Ruislip at 2.30pm for a place in the final. All available support would be welcome.

Mens Football:

Result: McArdle Cup Group 1, Round 5: Thomas McCurtains: 2-08, Tara: 0-12.

It was a game of two haves in Goodmayes as the footballers recorded another win in the McArdle Cup. Tara started the stronger hitting four scores without reply. McCurtains responded well with Paddy O'Neill scoring a well worked point and a Gavin O'Flaherty free. But Taras used the wind advantage well finishing out the first half stronger leaving the score at 0-09 0-02 in favour of the visitors.

The second half started well for McCurtains with James Searson scoring a quick point. Further points from Gavin Gallagher, Jason Deegan and O'Neill and a goal from O'Flaherty put the pressure on Taras holding onto a 1 point lead going into the last five minutes. Both teams traded scores before a free kick dropped short and Brian Hourihane reacted quickest to turn the ball into the back of the Taras net.

Best for McCurtains were Jason Deegan, Paddy O'Neill, Gavin O'Flaherty, Brian Hourihane and Micheal O'Leary.

THOMAS MCCURTAINS: C. Mulrennen; S. Conwell, E. Kelly, D. Corrigan; E. Breen, K. Delahunty, S. Quinn; P. O'Neill, M. O'Leary (c); G. Gallagher, G. O'Flaherty, J. Deegan; M. Gilsenan, B. Hourihane, J. Searon.

Subs: B. McHugh for O'Leary (42), C. Brodigan for Gilsenan (50) and R.Ellis.

Scorers: G. O'Flaherty (1f, 1-1), J. Deegan (0-3), B. Hourihane (1-0), P. O'Neill (0-2), J. Searson and G. Gallagher (0-1 each)

Fixture: McArdle Cup Semi Final v Tir Chonnail Gaels, Ruislip, Sunday 17th April at 2.30pm

Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm in Goodmayes pitch (Post code: IG3 8XJ). All new players are welcome. Please contact Martin Keyes (07712 106 349) for further details.

Hurling:

Result: Ronan Cup Group 2, Round 1: Thomas McCurtains: 1-17, St Declans: 2-07.

McCurtains Hurlers were always in control of this game as they hosted St Declans Gaa Club. Leading by 0-9 to 1-3 at the break they managed to push on against the breeze to run out comfortable winners.

Fixture: Ronan Cup Group 2, Round 2: v Robert Emmetts, Goodmayes, Saturday 16th April at 4.00pm

Training starts this week on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm in Goodmayes pitch (Post code: IG3 8XJ). All new players are welcome.

Ladies Football:

Result: Ronan Cup Group 2, Round 1: Thomas McCurtains: 0-02, Fulham Irish: 3-25.

The ladies had a tough opening game in the first round of the senior league against Fulham Irish this week. The score line doesn't reflect the work effort of the McCurtains ladies in the first half and the full back line of Maura Flood, Aileen O'Leary and Cora Commane deserve special mention for their tireless defence throughout. Fulham's experience was evident in the second half and McCurtains were unable to match their scoring opportunities. Some strong individual performances but lots for the East London ladies to work on as they take their senior league campaign forward. Congratulations to Maria McManus making her football debut for the club.

The ladies Tuesday training sessions will now take place in East London Rugby Club (E15 3BP) at 7pm and continue in Goodmayes pitch (IG3 8XJ) on Thursdays at 7pm. All new players welcome. Please contact Finnian O'Dowd (07966806011) for any information.

Camogie:

The camogie ladies travel to Pairc na hEireann in Birmingham, Saturday 16th April for the first round of the British League.

Camogie training will take place on Wednesday this week at 7pm in East London Rugby Club (E15 3BP).

Minor:

Result: U-16 League, Thomas McCurtains 3-04, St Kiernans 5-06

Fixture: Minor (U18) League v St Kiernans, St Kiernans, Saturday 16th April at 2.00pm

Minor (U-18) and U-16 football training will take place on fridays at 7pm in Wanstead Rugby Club (IG8 8JY)

London, April 8th, 2016 - McCurtains man set for TV role as Rory McIlroy lookalike

Rory McIlroy is most definitely in Georgia looking to complete a golfing Grand Slam but you would be forgiven for thinking you saw him walking and working around East London.

Damien "Ching" Power is a Waterford man who happens to look ridiculously like the famous Down golfer who is currently 1 under at Augusta National.

Being a proud Dungarvan native, Power is more accustomed to a hurl than a golf club and winning trophies for Thomas McCurtains GAA club in East London rather than chasing Jordan Spieth around for 18 holes in Georgia.

Inline images 3

Power has been invited to his fair share of sports awards and events due to his uncanny appearance but will feature in Channel 4's new series 'lookalikes' which returns to the small screen tonight at 10pm. At this point in time Damien is expecting to feature in Episode 3 or 4 of the series.
