All Britain Ladies Universities Blitz
Hazelwood, Sunbury-on-Thames, the home of London Irish played host to Ladies Universities Blitz on Saturday, December 2nd. Three Universities participated with St Marys (London), Birmingham and Coventry. The Blitz gave the teams a wonderful opportunity of playing games and the managers of the teams were delighted to use the matches as preparation for championship. The first game was between St Marys and Birmingham. This was a fast free flowing game with both sides converting some excellent scores. Goals would prove to be key as Birmingham kicked a late goal to come out victorious by the minimum margin in an absolute enthralling opening game of football. The Second game pitted Birmingham vs Coventry. Birmingham, fresh from playing a game already, started the game at a frantic pace. Coventry who had the most inexperienced side used the games as a platform for the upcoming championship. Birmingham ran out convincing winners in this game and finished the tournament with two wins. The final game of the afternoon pitted St Mary vs Coventry. It was evident from watching on the sideline that Coventry had progressed since there previous game as they played much better football and kicked some wonderful points, although during the second half St Marys were able to rotate subs and this proved pivotal. The fresh legs helped St Marys finish the stronger and they were deserving winners. Congratulations to Birmingham who were winners on the day, but Gaelic football was the real winner with the exhibition of entertainment provided by all teams. Big thanks to the two referees who are working with London GAA as interns. Finally best of luck to all three universities in the upcoming Championship campaigns in March.
