Foundation Level GAA Course
On Saturday November the 4th a Foundation Level Hurling course was run in McGovern Park, Ruislip. This course is the first step on the path to becoming a qualified GAA coach. This is an important course now because as of January 1st it is mandatory to have the Foundation Level Course complete if you wish to coach any underage team. It is also imperative that you have gone through a DBS check and have completed the Safeguarding Course by this date also. The course on Saturday was headed by Lloyd Colfer CDA for London GAA and Andrew Kane CDA for Lancashire GAA. This particular course was aimed at beginner coaches who have little to no experience in coaching Gaelic Games and will enable participants to assist a coach in the development of GAA. Saturdays course was Hurling orientated and in total there were 11 people on the course who throughout the day completed modules ranging from introduction to games, skill development, coaching of children/youths/adults and also movement skills. Beginning at 9 and finishing at half past 5 it was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved as each person taking part learned something new to take back to their clubs. Clubs represented on the day were Kilburn Gaels and Fr. Murphys. By the end of the day, each participant in attendance was capable of creating a suitable programme of games and skill development appropriate to every child’s needs, identifying the key skills of hurling, assisting a coach in the organisation and management of players for an effective training session and on how to build a rapport, give positive feedback and challenge each and every child they coach. Many thanks to all involved on the day for creating a safe, fun and non-judgemental learning environment where beginner coaches developed and prospered and now go back to their clubs as more competent coaches.
