London Ladies open
their championship account
London Ladies held their British Championship title at Ruislip on
Saturday as they opened their All Ireland Campaign against Lancashire, this
well prepared side started as they meant to go on with a blistering opening ten
minutes that saw several points cruise across the bar before any reply was
made by Lancashire, an early goal from London exposed some gaping holes in the
visitors defense that would be exploited by a panel who were in no mood to
relinquish their British title.
More goals were to follow in a half where London settled down to a working pattern that kept the umpires busy each side of the Lancashire goal-posts.
The break offered little relief for Lancashire, London picked up where
they left off and continued to press home their growing advantage this despite
a resurgence by Lancashire, more goals were to follow and with points from all
angles London Ladies finished the game having restricted their opponents to a solitary
point.
With the British title secure London can
now look forward to a visit from Louth in August when the second part of the
journey to Croke Park will be staged at Ruislip.

Lancashire Ladies Team of 2008
Lancashire is the smallest playing county of ladies Gaelic football in
the UK but it maintains a strong presence in the Northwest of the country, this
year new club John Mitchell’s has been added and are contributing a lot to
the game particularly in Liverpool .
We can expect to see a lot more from this region as the efforts and enthusiasm
of these committed ladies establishes.

Parnells Ladies Nine a Side team of 2008
Parnells Ladies retained their provincial crown after defeating John Mitchels in the final at the Erin go Bragh grounds in Birmingham.
Their success marked a day that saw them complete the competition undefeated and chalking up large scores throughout the day.
Along the way an impressive performance from the whole panel showed respect for the only UK competition open to all Ladies Football clubs.
The team was lead by Midland Lady Maria King who stood out for her efforts in defense supported by Karen Halpenny, Jackie McCowen and Mary O Connor, in the middle Carol McNicholas, Edel Grennan and Monica Jordan kept traffic moving in the right direction as Hanna Noonan and Anna Mc Gillacuddy repeatedly found the target, with regular raids on the same target by the midfield pack Parnells took a grip of he event, a grip that remained until they defeated John Mitchels of Birmingham in the final with a score of 4.08 to 0.00

Tara take the Shield

Tara ladies Nine a Side team of 2008
It was a well armed Tara Ladies team who participated in in this provincial tournament with no less than 15 players representing the club along with officials, their excellent turnout allowing them to top up the playing resources of other clubs who were involved.
Early success against Emerald Gaels of Manchester continued with wins over Sean McDermots and Roger Casements.
Strong play from Karen Togher, Bree White and Zelma Power kept an enthusiastic Tara team in contention throughout with only one defeat before vying for a place in the final of the cup competition, this to eventual winners Parnells, a game that was one of best of the day.
In their fight for a place in the cup final another tense game against John Mitchells gave witness to end to end football with small leads being regularly swapped and with keeper Zara Clarke making some dramatic saves, it was a fortunate John Mitchels that piped Tara past the winning line, however a place in the Shield competition beckoned.
Unwilling to go home empty handed Tara took on Emerald Gaels in the shield final a game where caution took hold for long periods, regular raids by both squads were greeted by strong defense with only the occasional exchange of points breaking the deadlock.
A late goal relieved the siege for Tara who won the game with a score of 1.03 to 0.03.

In her address Brenda expressed disappointment at the withdrawals from the tournament, in particular she found that late notice by several clubs had imposed many rethinkings of the program by organizers, added to this was the reallocation of resources offered by the hosts who worked hard at presenting a good image of Ladies Gaelic Football.
